The Undergraduate Program in Materials and Textiles

The undergraduate program has changed from a focus on textile manufacturing to a focus on the development and application of new textiles, new processes and new soft materials. This reflects the transition from textile manufacturing being a major employer in New England to research and development and specialty products being the major employer. From Fall 2005 we have established the new structure with two options, one in Technology of Materials, which includes a business minor and one in Materials and Biomaterials which has a more concentrated engineering focus. We expect that students on the first option would join a high tech business on either the business or technical side. The second option would lead to careers on the R&D side or to a higher degree in science or engineering.

The previous program is still being phased out for Juniors and Seniors. This that there are three different catalog entries. That for 2003/4 reflects the old course structure. That for 2004/5 introduced the new Materials and Biomaterials option in place of the Applied Fiber sciences option, removes textile chemistry.
